Local forum (pretty successul) - how to sell??
  • Hey everyone,

a friend of mine has founded a forum 4 yrs ago or so and over time he got a little bit tired of running it. So he decided to sell. He asked me as he knew that I am acting in the area business ;)

So we agreed on some kind of affiliate model where I try to sell his forum best price and he pays me a 10% success fee (I know, for professional agents you would usually pay more but as we are friends I didn't want to rip him off).

Here are some information on the forum:

    General

This is one of the main blocking points maybe. The forum is located in Germany and gets 85% of his traffic from Germany. This is of course due to the fact that it's a German forum. Here are some general figures as a snapshot of the moment I am writing this:

106k posts in approx 7,3k threads[/*:m]

~1,100 users[/*:m][/list:u]

    Traffic

Before I write some long paragraphs I'll better show you some screeners from GA (I'm a lazy guy :) )

    Overview from the dashboard

    Visitors overview

    Geolocations

    Referring sites

    Search engines

    http://learnphotoshopyourself.org/hrb/images/phil/swc/search-engine-trafic.png

Some things seem to be obvious for me when I have a look at these stats:

Referring sites are very unimportant[/*:m]

The bounce rate is pretty low which is good I think. Although I don't know if this is typical for a forum style website[/*:m]

Visitors spend quite some time on the site (>9 minutes). That matches to the findings above regarding the bounce rate[/*:m][/list:u]

    Keywords

It's interesting that majority of the visitors do not come through search engines. For a forum-related keyword this website is no. 5 in Google Germany. But these keywords are not the main traffic drivers as they have between 50 and 70 searches per day. The forum - as you can see from the 1st screenshot - gets ~600 uniques per day.

    Others

Interesting fact that this forum has not been monetized very much. My friend sells t-shirts once per year until he hits a limit determined by German laws. He reaches this limit very fast (usually in under a week) so I assume that there is at last some buying intention.

Okay, that's the situation as is but here are my questions:

How would you set up a sales letter[/*:m]

Would you sell such a local site on Flippa?[/*:m]

What price do you think is possible for this?[/*:m]

Any other comments or suggestions?[/*:m][/list:u]

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

  • hmmmm.... no answer so far not even from the admins?
  • Hi,

Basically all I can really say is, try the German market first before listing on flippa.
This would not be as interesting to US, Australian, UK or any other citizens other then Germans, so your best bet is to try the local market first.
Also, I would at least monetize for a month to up the value this forum has. Try adsense to start with.
I am not sure what the forum is about but it could be monetized by endorsing certain info products as well.

    Just my 2c for now.
    Good luck and best regards,
    Mark
  • Sorry for slow response, we are not in the country at the moment so not online 24/7.

10% is fine as a success fee, it is pretty much industry standard for brokers and exactly what myself and Bryan would charge.

First question would be: how much does your friend want to get for it? I would usually get that figure and then think about where to list it.
