• Hello,

While doing some research I found a site that is ranking for a LOT of really good keywords but it looks like a bit of a junk site.

It still has the default wordpress 2012 theme and the sample page is still intact in the navigation.

I checked the backlinks and it has 4012.

I was wondering how to tell if this site is getting it's rankings legitimately or if it will be obliterated in an upcoming google algorithm update.

    Thanks,
    Steve
  • My recommendation would be
1.) Ask the site owner what they did for backlink building.
2.) Pull their backlinks using ahrefs, opensiteexplorer, or majestic seo and manually review them for low quality/off topic links.
3.) If you want to get really in depth, hire a company to run a link audit.

Non-authority sites totally reliant on organic rankings are risky!

    Hope that gets you started.
  • Thanks Chris.

I can't find contact info for the site owner so that's probably a red flag right there.

    That's great advice!... Thanks.
